Joseph Smith to Martin Harris, February 22, 1831
Joseph directs Martin Harris to come to Kirtland immediately to select land for himself and brethren. Bring copies of the Book of Mormon. Work progressing rapidly in Kirtland. Elders needed. Laws of the Kingdom have been received gladly. See that Joseph Smith Sr. family is cared for. Send Hyrum Smith and Newel Knight.

Compact settlement
 ¶ I send you this to inform you that it is necessary for you to come here as soon as you can in order to choose a place which may be best adapted to the circumstances of yourself and breatheren in the east to settle on as you may choose any place which may best suit yourselves any where in this part of the country so as to be as compact as possable and as you will be better {capable of} able to make a {choise} choice than we can that when they come they may have places to got{o}

you will also bring or cause to <be> brought all the books, as the work is here breaking forth on the east west north and south, you will also inform the Elders which are there that all of them who can be spared will come here without delay if possable this by Commandment of the Lord as he has a great work for them all in this our inheritence.    
Laws of the Kingdom received gladly ¶ We have received the laws of the Kingdom since we came here and the Disciples in these parts have received them gladly.
Laws: D&C 42. The outside of the letter is dated February 23, 1831, the date that "the Law" was completed.

Hyrum: original Hiram

Newel: Newel Knight


Hyrum and Jerusha Smith lived with Newel Knight while Hyrum presided over the Colesville church. Upon receipt of Joseph's letter, he and Jerusha moved Joseph Sr. to Kirtland. Newel brought the Colesville church in the April–May. Newel Knight Journal in Early documents 4:44; Lucy, 446, 447n.
Take care of Father Smith's family   You will see that {old} Father Smiths family are taken care of and sent on
Have Hyrum and Newl come immediately if possible   You will send to Colesville and have either Hyrum or Newel to come {immede} immedeately or both if they can be spared.
¶ You will not sell the books for less than 10 Shillings
