The Far West Record is the name of a ledger book given to
the high council in Far West, Missouri in 1838. It contains copies of
meeting minutes from 1830 to 1839, plus minutes of the June 1 and 15,
1844 meetings of the Nauvoo high council. |

It is 8 1/2" x
13". Two thirds of the book contains no writing. There are 181
pages in the hands of Ebenezer
Robinson and Hosea Stout, who copied original minutes into the book, which
identifies twenty-four clerks who took the original
minutes. |

The modern title of the record book
was attached to the document by association after the Saints had settled
in Utah. It was from the title page of the book that the name "Far West
Record" was derived.
This title was used in Church inventory of historical documents in 1855. |

For consistency and ease of use, each page begins
with standard categories such as date, location, moderator, etc. When these
categories and/or associated information are bracketed, they have been
supplied by the webmaster. |
|
|
| |
|
For example, [Presiding] [Joseph Smith] means that I assume
that Joseph presided because he attended. Moreover, presiding (or
any of its variants) does not appear in the text. |

|
Unfortunately, it was not until late in the process that
I applied this convention rigorously, so there are still some
instances of Moderator of Presiding, etc. that I have
silently supplied. |
|
|
| |
|
For example, in some instances, the text may say "… was
called to the chair," but the category may appear as Presiding.
I am working on this, but it is not a top priority. |
