Doctrine and Covenants 40  
January 6, 1831, Fayette, Seneca County, New York.

James Covill gladly received the commandment (D&C 39), but Satan tempted him. Fearing persecution, he rejected the word.

  43rd. Com<m>andment January 6th 1831        
  ¶ A Revelation to Joseph & Sidney Recd at Fayette Senecca County state of NY telling them why James Receivd not the <obeyed> not the Command which he Received &c A Revelation to Joseph, and Sidney, given in Fayette, New-York, January, 1831, explaining why James (C.,) obeyed not the revelation which was given unto him. Revelation to Joseph Smith, jr. and Sidney Rigdon, given January, 1831, explaining why James Covill, obeyed not the revelation which was given unto him.    
1 ¶ Behold verily I say unto you that his heart was right before me for he covenanted with me that he would obey my word Behold, verily I say unto you, that his heart was right before me, for he covenanted with me, that he would obey my word. Behold, verily I say unto you, that the heart of my servant James Covill was right before me, for he covenanted with me, that he would obey my word. 1 Blue: dropped in 1835

3 wherefore he broke the <my> covenant which he had made & it Remaineth in me to do with him as seemeth me good Amen. Wherefore he broke my covenant, and it remaineth in me to do with him as seemeth me good[.] Amen. wherefore he broke my covenant, and it remaineth with me to do with him as seemeth me good. Amen.
