Doctrine and Covenants 38
January 2, 1831, Fayette, New York.

A land of promise and riches to inherit for eternity §. God will rule §. Go to Ohio for His law and power from on high §. Sell, rent, sacrifice New York property §. Be clean and united, preach in meekness.

  A Revelation to the churches in New-York, commanding them to remove to Ohio, given in Fayette, New-York, January, 1831.   D&C verse numbers are right of the text. There are no substantive changes in D&C.

    ¶ A Commandment to the Churches in Nework at a conference they being Commanded to flee to Ohio &c      
Lord's titles 1 Saying thus saith the Lord <your> God even Jesus Christ the Great I AM Alph[a] and Omega the beginning & the end the same which looked upon the wide expance of eternity & all the Scerifick hosts of heaven before the world was made   [1] THUS saith the Lord yourGod, even Jesus Christ, the Great I AM, Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the same which looked upon the wide expanse of eternity, and all the seraphic hosts of heaven, before the world was made, 1
Know all things 2 the same which k[n]oweth all things for all things are present before mine eyes   the same which knoweth all things, for all things are present before mine eyes:  
Made all 3 I am the same which spake &   the world was made & all things came by me   I am the same which spake and the world was made, and all things came by me:  
Christ, Zion of Enoch 4 I am the same which hath taken the Zion of Enoch into mine own bosom   [3] I am the same which hath  taken the Zion of Enoch into mine own bosom: hath changed to have in 1835 D&C
    & verily I say even as many as have believed in my name for I am Christ & in mine own name by the [50] Virtue of the blood which I have spilt have I pled before the Father for them:   [4] And verily I say, even as many as have believed in my name, for I am Christ, and in mine own name, by the virtue of the blood which I have spilt, have I plead before the Father for them:
Wicked in chains until judgment day 5 but Behold the residue of the wicked have I kept in Chains of darkness untill the Judgement of the great day which shall come at the end of the Earth   [5] But behold the residue of the wicked have I kept in chains of darkness until the judgment of the great day, which shall come at the end of the earth,
Wo, wo, wo 6 & even so will I cause the wicked <to be kept> that will not hear my voice but harden their hearts and wo wo <wo> is their doom   and even so will I cause the wicked to be kept, that will not hear my voice but harden their hearts, and wo, wo, wo, is their doom.  
I see you, you can't see me 7 But Behold Verily Verily I say unto you that mine eyes are upon you I am in your midst & ye cannot see me   [6] But behold verily, verily I say unto you that mine eyes are upon you. I am in your midst and ye cannot see me; 2
Soon you will see me 8 but the day soon cometh that ye shall see me and know that I am   but the day soon cometh that ye shall see me, and know that I am:
Must be purified   for the chains of vails of darkness shall soon be rent & he that is not purified shall not abide the day   [7] For the veil of darkness shall soon be rent, and he that is not purified shall not abide the day:  
Gird up 9 wherefore gird up your loins and be prepared   [8] Wherefore gird up your loins and be prepared. Enemies
Kingdom yours, enemy not overcome   Behold the Kingdom is yours & the enemy shall not overcome   [9] Behold the kingdom is yours and the enemy shall not overcome.    
Some not clean 10 Verily I say unto you ye are clean but not all & there is none else with whom I am well pleased   [10] Verily I say unto you, ye are clean but not all; and there is none else with whom I am well pleased, 3 well pleased: ¶ D&C 1:30, Nov. 11, 1831.
All flesh corrupt 11 for all flesh is corruptabl before me & the powers of darkness prevail upon the Earth among the Children of men in the presence of all the hosts <of> Heaven   for all flesh is corruptible before me, and the powers of darkness prevail upon the earth, among the children of men, in the presence of all the hosts of heaven,  
Eternity pained, angels ready to burn 12 which causeth silence to reign & all eternity is pained & the Angels are waiting the great command to Reap down the Earth to gether the tears that they may be burned   which causeth silence to reign, and all eternity is pained, and the angels are waiting the great command, to reap down the earth, to gather the tares that they may be burned: Enemies
Enemy combined   & Behold the enemy is combined   [11] And behold the enemy is combined.  
Secret 13 & now I shew unto you a Mystery a thing which is had in secret Chambers to bring to pass even your destruction in process of time and ye knew it not   [12] And now I show unto you a mystery, a thing which is had in secret chambers, to bring to pass even your destruction, in process of time, and ye knew it not, 4  
Will be merciful 14 but now I tell it <unto> you & ye are blessed not because of your iniquity neither your hearts of unbelief for Verily <some of> you are guilty before me <but I will be merciful unto your weakness>   but now I tell it unto you, and ye are blessed, not because of your iniquity, neither your hearts of unbelief, for verily some of you are guilty before me; but I will be merciful unto your weakness. Kingdom yours 15 Therefore be ye strong from henceforth fear not for the Kingdom is yours   [13] Therefore, be ye strong from henceforth; fear not, for the kingdom is yours:
No respecter of persons 16 & for your Salvation I gave it <give> unto you a commandment for I have heard your prayers & the poor have complained before me & the rich have I made & all flesh is mine & I am no respector & I to persons   [14] And for your salvation I give unto you a commandment, for I have heard your prayers, and the poor have complained before me, and the rich have I made, and all flesh is mine, and I am no respecter to persons. to persons changed to of persons in D&C.
Lord will stand on earth 17 & I have made the earth rich & Behold it is my footstool Wherefore again I will stand upon it   And I have made the earth rich, and behold it is my footstool: wherefore, again I will stand upon it:
Land of promise, no curse on it when Lord comes 18 & I hold forth & deign to give unto you greater [51] Riches even a land of promise a land flowing with milk & Honey upon which there shall be no curse <when the Lord cometh>   [15] And I hold forth and deign to give unto you greater riches, even a land of promise; a land flowing with milk and honey, upon which there shall be no curse when the Lord cometh, Insertion made after seeing Missouri in July–August, 1831?.

Cursings
Give it to you 19 & I will give it unto you for the land of your enheritance if you seek it with all your hearts   and I will give it unto you for the land of your inheritance, if you seek it with all your hearts:
Inherit it forever 20 & this shall be my covenant with you ye shall have it for the land of your inheritance & for the inheritance of your Children forever while the Earth shall stand & ye shall Possess it again in eternity no more to pass away   [16] And this shall be my covenant with you, ye shall have it for the land of your inheritance, and for the inheritance of your children forever, while the earth shall stand, and ye shall possess it again in eternity, no more to pass away: earth an inheritance: ¶ D&C 45:58, Mar. I will be your king 21 But Verily I say unto you that in time ye shall have no King nor Ruler for I will be your King and watch over you   [17] But verily I say unto you that in time ye shall have no king nor ruler, for I will be your King and watch over you. 5
No laws but mine 22 Wherefore hear my voice and follow me & you shall be a free People & ye shall have no laws but my laws <when I come,> for I am your Lawgiver & who <what> can stay my hand   [18] Wherefore, hear my voice and follow me, and you shall be a free people, and ye shall have no laws but my laws when I come, for I am your Lawgiver, and what can stay my hand. Teach each other 23 But Verily I say unto you teach one another according to the Office wherewith I have appointed you   [19] But verily I say unto you, teach one another according to the office wherewith I have appointed you,
Practice holiness 24 & let evry man esteem his brother as himself & practice Virtue and Holyness before me.   and let every man esteem his brother as himself, and practice virtue and holiness before me.
Esteem each other 25 & again I say unto you let every man esteem his Brother as himself   [20] And again I say unto you, let every man esteem his brother as himself:
Man with twelve sons 26 for what man among you having twelve sons & is no respecter to them & they Serve him obediently & he saith unto the one be thou clothed in Robes & sit thou here & to the other be thou clothed in Raggs & sit thou there & looketh upon his sons & saith I am Just   [21] For what man among you, having twelve sons, and is no respecter to them, and they serve him obediently, and he saith unto the one, be thou clothed in robes and sit thou here; and to the other, be thou clothed in rags and sit thou there, and looketh upon his sons and saith I am just  
If not one, ye are not mine 27 Behold <this> I have given unto you [as] a Parable & it is even as I am I say unto you be one & if ye are not one ye are not mine   Behold, this I have given unto you as a parable, and it is even as I am. I say unto you be one and if ye are not one ye are not mine. 6 be one: ¶ D&C 51:9, May 1831.

Foreign wars soon 29 ye hear of wars in far Countries & you <ye> <you> say in your hearts that there will soon be great wars in far Countries but ye know not the hearts of they <them> in your own Land   [23] Ye hear of wars in far countries, and you say that there will soon be great wars in far countries, but ye know not the hearts of them in your own land:
Because of your prayers 30 I tell you these things because of your prayers   [24] I tell you these things because of your prayers:
Be wise   Wherefore treasure up Wisdom in your bosoms lest the wickedness of men revea<l> reveal these things in your unto you by their wicke[d]ness in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the Earth   [24] Wherefore, treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you, by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears, with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth:    
Be prepared   but if ye are prepared ye need <shall > not fear   [26] But if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.    
So you can escape 31 & that ye might escape the power of the enemy & be gethered unto me a Rrighteous people without spot & blameless   [27] And that ye might escape the power of the enemy, and be gathered unto me a righteous people, without spot and blameless: 7 Enemies
Go to Ohio for my law, power 32 Wherefore for this cause I gave unto you [52] The commandment that ye <you> should go to the Ohio & there I will give unto you my law & there you shall be endowed with power from on high   [28] Wherefore, for this cause I gave unto you the commandment, that ye should go to the Ohio: and there I will give unto you my law, and there you shall be endowed with power from on high, to the Ohio: D&C 37, Dec. Great work in mind 33 and from thence whomsoever I will shall go forth among all Nations & it shall be told them what they shall do for I have a great work laid up in store   and from thence, whomsoever I will shall go forth among all nations, and it shall be told them what they shall do, for I have a great work laid up in store:  
Will save and lead Israel   for Israel shall be saved and I will lead them whithersoever I will & no power can <shall> stay my hand   [29] For Israel shall be saved, and I will lead them whithersoever I will, and no power shall stay my hand.    
Men to be appointed 34 And now I give unto the church in these parts a commandment that certain men among them shall be appointed & they shall be appointed by the voice of the Church   [30] And now I give unto the church in these parts a commandment, that certain men among them shall be appointed, and they shall be appointed by the voice of the church; 8 In Kirtland the bishop will be assigned to look after the poor. ¶ D&C 42:31, Feb. 9, 1831.
To care for poor and send them to Ohio 35 & they shall look to the poor and the needy and administer to their relief that they shall not suffer & send them forth to the place which I have commanded them   and they shall look to the poor and the needy, and administer to their relief, that they shall not suffer; and send them forth to the place which I have commanded them;
Manage church property 36 & this shall be their Work to govern the affairs of the Church property of the <this> Church.   and this shall be their work, to govern the affairs of the property of this church.  
If you can't sell farms, rent them 37 & they that <who> have farms that cannot be sold let them be left or rented as seemeth them good   And they that have farms, that cannot be sold, let them be left or rented as seemeth them good.  
Save stuff 38 see that all things are preserved & when men are endowed with power from on high and
& sent forth all these things shall be gethered unto the Bosom of the church
  [31] See that all things are preserved, and when men are endowed with power from on high, and sent forth, all these things shall be gathered unto the bosom of the church.
Riches of eternity

Beware of pride
39 & if ye seek the riches which <it> is the will of the Father to give unto you ye shall be the richest of all People for ye shall have the riches of eternity   [32] And if ye seek the riches which it is the will of the Father to give unto you, ye shall be the richest of all people, for ye shall have the riches of eternity: 9  
Riches of the earth   & it must needs be that the riches of the Earth is mine to give   [33] And it must needs be that the riches of the earth  mine to give:  
    but beware of Pride lest ye become as the Nephites of old   [34] But beware of pride, lest ye become as the Nephites of old.
Work with your hands 40 & again I say unto you I give unto you a commandment that every man both Elder Priest teacher & also member go to with his might with the labor of his hands to prepare and accomplish the things which I have commanded   [35] And again, I say unto you, I give unto you a commandment, that every man both elder, priest, teacher and also member, go to with his might, with the labor of his hands, to prepare and accomplish the things which I have commanded.  
Preach mildly 41 & let your preaching be the warning voice evry man to his Neighbour in mildness & in meekness   [36] And let your preaching be the warning voice, every man to his neighbor, in mildness and in meekness.
Leave the wicked 42 & go ye out from among the wicked save yourselves   [37] And go ye out from among the wicked. Save yourselves.
Be clean   be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord even so= <amen>   [38] Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. Even so. Amen.
