"the work broak out & not withstandin the great opposition and the falling away that had taken plase." Orson Hyde and Samuel H. Smith had baptized five and ordained an elder "some weeks before," but the elder and two members "had fell away." Carter and Stoddard baptize eight and reclaim two of the three who had fallen away. Oct. 6–8, 1833 Joseph Smith, Freemen Nickerson, Sidney Rigdon, John Rudd Joseph and Freeman arrive at Springfield, Erie County, Pennsylvania, on Sunday and find Sidney preaching to the church there. They speak to "a great congregation" at John Rudd's that night and leave Elk Creek, on Tuesday. Diary-2 in JS personal, rev. ed., 23–24.
