Motto of the Church (1838)
After fleeing Kirtland in the night of January 12, 1838. On March 13, Joseph and his family arrive "within 8 milds of Far West and put up at brother Barnerds to [394] tarry for the night. Here we ware meet by an escort of brethreren from the town who came to make us welcome to their little Zion." The next day they arrive in Fort West and move into the home of George W. Harris. Two or three days later [March 16 or 17], Samuel H. Smith and family arrive. "Shortly after his arrival while walking with him & cirtain other gretheren the following sentiments occured to my mind."

Good will ¶ Peace and good order in society Love to God and good will to man.    
  ¶ All good and wholesome Laws; And virtue and truth above all things    
Aristarchy forever ¶ And Aristarchy, live for ever!!!   Aristarchy: Erroneous alteration of Aristarchi ‘severe critics’ (Gr. : see ARISTARCH) in some later edd. of the works cited below. Hence in WEBSTER (1828–32) and some later Dicts. (with erroneous definition).

Woe ¶ But Wo, to tyrants, Mobs, Aristocracy, Anarchy, and Toryism:  
  ¶ And all those who invent or seek out unrighteous and vexatious lawsuits under the pretext or color of law or office, either religion or political.  
Exalt democracy, down with priestcraft

Blood of our fathers
 
¶ Exalt the standard of Democracy! Down with that of Priestcraft, and let all the people say Amen! that the blood of our Fathers may not cry from the ground against us.  
¶ Sacred is the Memory of that Blood which baught for us our liberty.
