Sidney Rigdon's Independence Day Oration (1838) After traditional remarks on the virtues of the American form of government, Rigdon declares the Saints will defend their rights to the point of "a war of extermination."
Extermination Order Order of Missouri Governor Lillburn W. Boggs to General John B. Clark to exterminate the Mormons or drive them from the state, October 27, 1838.
Hyrum Smith's Far West (1) Joseph and Hyrum Smith go to Daviess county in August 1838 on report of two Mormons being murdered during the Gallatin election. Judge signs statement that he would and agrees to meet with locals. Provocateurs from Millport make threats, whip Mormon men, etc. General Atchison orders out militia and disperses them, but the mob returns. General Doniphan orders Col. Hinkle to call out the Caldwell county militia to defend Far West. Mob surrounds DeWitt. Governor and Judge King are petitioned while Rev. Bogart's militia pillages along Log and Long Creeks.
Joseph Smith's Far West Assassination plots and attempts greet Joseph in Caldwell county from his arrival in March. Governor, judges, and public officials encourage persecution. Mob marches on Daviess county. Joseph and Colonel Hinckle respond. Militia under Lyman Wight opposes mob. Mob burns own homes. Battle of Crooked River. State militia reaches Far West, October 28. At Hinkle's instance, Joseph and others go out to meet with officers but are taken prisoner. Militia plunders Far West. Prisoners taken to Independence, then Richmond. Court of inquiry, Liberty jail, escape. Catalog of enemies, rhetorical summary. Though anxious for family, Joseph remained calm, assured by still small voice. Virtuous Saints, friends, martyrs. Persecution expected. Appeal to the nation, an American tragedy.
Siege of DeWitt Mormons begin to settle DeWitt, Carroll county, Missouri, in July, 1838, but in August they are ordered out by vigilantes from neighboring counties, and in October are driven out by an armed mob.
