January   George W. Robinson begins service as clerk and recorder of High Council meetings in Kirtland (to November 27, 1837).   Writing JS, 449.
January 1   Joseph Smith meets with his father, brothers Hyrum and William, Uncle John Smith, and Martin Harris to resolve dispute between Joseph and William. Father Smith prays, William makes humble confession, Joseph asks his forgiveness, tearful reconciliation.   JS diary 1835–1836, 95–96 in Selected collections 1:20.

Debating School Incident, 1835–1836
January 2   William Smith acknowledges Orson Johnson's charges are and promises to make public confession. He is forgiven. Almon Babbit also confesses and is restored to fellowship.   Minutes of Jan. 2, 1836
January 3   Sidney Rigdon delivers Sunday morning sermon on revelation. Afternoon, Joseph confirms ten or twelve and William Smith confesses to the church and is "cordially received into fellowship again" William preaches at early candle-light. "The cloud that has been hanging over us has burst with blessings on our heads," Joseph declares, "and Satan has been foiled in his attempts to destroy me and the Church,"   JS diary 1835–1836 in Papers 2:126.

¶ Debating School Incident, 1835–1836
January 4   Hebrew school organized (without Dr. Peixotto). " the translating room (west room in the upper part of the temple), "which was consecrated this morning by prayer, offered up by Father Smith. "Altercation" in the temple over singing school arrangements resolved by choosing committee of six.   Original: Piexotto

January 5  

Hebrew class is divided into classes. Joseph Smith and Orson Pratt (h2) argue over the pronunciation of a Hebrew letter. "He manifested a stubborn spirit, in which I was much grieved."

January 6   Joseph, Orson, and school members settle Orson's "unpleasant fleeings." "And after much controversy, he confessed his fault for entering into any controversy concerning so small a matter as the sound of a Hebrew letter, and asked the forgiveness of the whole school, and was cheerfully forgiven by all."   History JS, MS 15, no. 35 (Aug. 27, 1853): 565.

Minutes of Jan. 6, 1836
    William E. McLellin (h) returns from Hudson and reports that he has arranged for a Hebrew scholar (Joshua Seixas) to teach forty students for seven weeks for $320, beginning in two weeks.   Hudson: Western Reserve College at Hudson, Summit Co., Ohio, 28 miles south of Kirtland, founded 1826.

    In Kirtland the stake presidency of Zion ordains 5 members of the high council in Zion to replace four who had been called to be apostles, and one who had passed away.    
January 7   Feast at Bishop N. K. Whitney's "after the order of the Son of God—the lame, the halt, and blind were invited, according to the instruction of the Saviour." Joseph Smith Sr. prays, gives N. K.'s parents patriarchal blessings.   History JS, MS 15, no. 35 (Aug. 27, 1853): 567.
January 8   Rapid progress in Hebrew school. Plastering and hard-finishing of the exterior of the Lord's House is completed (Artemas Millet and Lorenzo Young subcontractors, $1000). Jacob Bump continues plastering the inside ($1,500).   History JS, MS 15, no. 35 (Aug. 27, 1853): 567.
January 9   Attends feast at N. K. Whitney's with his parents and Emma. Large assembly. Joseph Sr. blesses several. Could this feast and that of the 7th be the same?   History JS, MS 15, no. 35 (Aug. 27, 1853): 568.
January 10   Wilber Denton and Jenkins Salisbury in the morning, Samuel Smith and Don Carlos Smith in the afternoon. "They all did well considering their youth." Martin Harris baptizes three.   History JS, MS 15, no. 35 (Aug. 27, 1853): 568.
January 13   The church leadership of Kirtland and Far West meet, including both presidencies, high councils, bishops, and many elders. Fill vacancies on high council due to organization of the Twelve.   Minutes of Jan. 13, 1836
January 15   Rules for the house of the Lord are approved by the presidency, high council of Kirtland, high council of Zion, Twelve, Bishop and counselors of Zion, Bishop and counselors of Kirtland, and Seventy. January 16   Twelve air their grievances with the First Presidency, the presidency apologizes, covenant with each other.   Minutes of Jan. 16, 1836
January 17   First Presidency and Twelve confess their faults to one another, tears, gift of tongues "like the rushing of a mighty wind."   Minutes of Jan. 17, 1836
January 21   At about 3. oclock P.M I dismissed the School and the presidency; retired to the loft of the printing office, where we attended to the ordinance of washing our bodies in pure water, we also perfumed our bodies and our heads, in the name of the Lord   Diary-2, 135.
    In the House of the Lord, Joseph has a vision of the Father and the Son, Adam, Abraham, his parents and his brother Alvin, in the celestial kingdom. Children who die before 8 years, and all others who would have received the gospel had they heard it before they died, inherit the celestial kingdom.   D&C 137
    Joseph tells visitor membership "in this branch" (Kirtland) is 1,500–2,000.

    Warren Parrish succeeds Orson Hyde (h) as scribe for the First Presidency.   Writing JS, 448.
January 22   Joseph and his counselors anoint and bless Thomas B. Marsh to bless the Twelve. The Twelve anoint and bless the presidency of the Seventy. Sylvester Smith leaps up and exclaims, 'The horseman [horsemen] of Israel and the chariots thereof.'" After the anointings and blessings, "the gift of tongues fell upon us in mighty power. Angels mingled their voices with ours, while their presence was in our midst, and unceasing praises swelled our bosoms for the space of half an hour."   MH-B, 620.

¶ Member Visions
    Alvah Beman had been tempted to doubt the things which we received on saturday evening and he made an humble confession, and asked forgiveness of the school, which was joyfully given; and he said he would try to resist satan in future   MH-B, 620.
January 25   Joseph receives Warren's letter that he is ill and cannot come, so he appoints Sylvester Smith acting scribe until Warren returns (February 8).   MH-B, 621.
    First Presidency organizes the quorum of Seventies. Sylvester sees "a pillar of fire rest down and abide upon the heads of the quorum, as we stood in the midst of the twelve."    
         
January 26   Mr. Seixas arrives from Hudson to teach the Hebrew to the brethren in the House of the Lord.    
January 28   Following the organization of the Seventy preparatory to their anointing in the House of the Lord, many spiritual manifestations are reported, including Zebedee Coltrin's vision of "the Savior extended before him, as upon the cross, and a little after, crowned with glory upon his head above the brightness of the sun."

January 30   Presidents resolve ordinations to require quorum approvals. Harvey Whitlock to be rebaptized.   Minutes of Jan. 30, 1836
February   First hymnal, prepare by Emma Smith, is printed and bound.    
February 3   Elders quorum president Alvah Beman submits the names of seventy elders to be considered for ordination as seventies.   HC 2:391.
February 6   The "anointed" meet by quorum in the House of the Lord. Many visions are reported. Zebedee Coltrin sees "the Lord's host."   HC 2:392.
February 8   Joseph's journal is returned to Warren Parrish, whose health has improved.   MS history, 624–624.
February 28   Two Irvingites from Scotland call on Joseph, "to make inquiry about the work of the Lord in these last days." They treat Joseph respectfully and express satisfaction with what they hear at Mormon services. (One is J. Hewitt.)   JS personal, 164.
March 7 In Professor Seixas' class, Joseph translates Genesis 17. Seixas agrees to teach three more weeks after a vacation of two weeks. MS 15, no. 41 (Oct. 8, 1853): 661.
March 8 In Professor Seixas' class, Joseph translates Genesis 22, then translates ten verses of Exodus 3 (homework). Attends daily classes. MS 15, no. 41 (Oct. 8, 1853): 662.
March 11 School committee reaches agreement for Mr. Seixas to continue and bring his family to Kirtland. MS 15, no. 41 (Oct. 8, 1853): 662.
March 11   Joseph appoints Edward Partridge, Isaac Morley, John Corrill, and W. W. Phelps "wise men" to purchase land in Missouri for the Saints to occupy, and gives them funds for that purpose.   FWR, 105n3.
March 13 Met with the Presidency, and some of the Twelve, and counselled with them upon the subject of removing to Zion this spring. We conversed freely upon the importance of her redemption, and the necessity of her redemption, and the necessity of the Presidency removing to that place, that their influence might be more effectually used in gathering the saints to that country; and we finally came to the resolution to emigrate on or before the 15th of May next, if kind providence smiles upon us, and opens the way before us. March 27   First day of the Kirtland temple dedication. Angels are seen in the solemn assembly.   HC 2:410–428; ¶ Other Visions

Spring   Eliza R. Snow boards with the Smith family and teaches a school for young ladies.   Eliza's writings, 10.
April 1   Leman Copley calls on Joseph and "confessed that he bore a fals[e] testimony against me in a suit I brought against Doctor P. Hurlbut for threatening my life, he confessed that he bore a fals testimony against me, in that suit but verily thought at the time that he was right but on calling to mind all all the circumstances connected the with the things that transpired at the time he was convinced that he was wrong, and humbly confessed it and asked my forgivness, which was readily granted, he also wished to be received into the church again by baptism, and was received according to his desire, he gave me his confession in writing"   Diary-2, 191–192. April 2   Warren A. Cowdery begins keeping Joseph's journal—writing in third person.   Diary-2, 119. (See PWJS, 217n237–348.)
    Joseph, Sidney, Oliver Cowdery, Frederick G. Williams, John Whitmer and W. W. Phelps (all six church presidents) confer on the redemption of Zion:  
   
   
    The positive manner in which he [Joseph Smith] expressed himself on this, <his> favorite theme, was directly calculated to produce conviction in the minds of those who heard him, that his whole soul was engaged in it, nothwithstanding on a superficial view of the same subject they might differ from him in judgment. It was determined in council, after mature deliberation that he and O. Cowdery should act in concert in raising funds for the accomplishment of the aforesaid object. As soon as the above plan was settled, he and O. Cowdery set out together, and their success was such in one half day, as to give them pleasing anticipations, and assure them that they were doing the will of God and that his work prospered in their hands   Diary-2, 119. // PWJS, 217. Written in third person, converted to first person when incorporated in the Manuscript History of the Church (below).

    After mature deliberation the council decided that Oliver Cowdery and myself should act as a board or committee to raise all the money we could in righteousness for a season, to send by, or to, certain wise men appointed to purchase land in Zion, in obedience to a revelation or commandment of the [727] Lord, for the mutual benefit of the council.   MH-B, 726–727.

    "Also it was agreed by the council, that Sidney Rigdon and F. G. Williams exert themselves in divising ways and means with the setock [sic] on hand, the available outstanding claims, of the council <company>, and such other means as they may deem most proper, to discharge the company's debts.   Not in Diary-2.     It was also agreed that, W. W. Phelps, John Whitmer and David Whitmer have 500 Books of Doctrine and Covenants, when bound and 500 hymn books, together with the subscription list for the "Messenger and Advocate," and "Northern Times" now due in Clay County, Mo. And that Messrs Phelps and J. Whitmer be released from the responsibility of all claims on them or either of them, as joint partners in the council <Firm>." W. A. Cowdery, clerk.   Not in Diary-2.     As soon as the above plans were settled, I started with Prest. Cowdery on our mission, and our success was such in one half day as to give us pleasing anticipations. that we were doing the will of God, and assured that his work prospered in our hands.    
April 3   The Lord appears to Joseph and Oliver and accepts the House of the Lord; then Moses, Elijah, and Elias commit the keys of gathering, gospel of Abraham, turning the hearts of fathers/children.    Last entry of Diary-2.

D&C 110
June   Frederick G. Williams defeats incumbant Justice of the Peace for Kirtland, anti-Mormon Josiah Jones. Frederick resigns September 25, 1837.    
June 16   Member disfellowshipped for "a want of benevolence to the poor, and charity to the Church."   Minutes of June 16, 1836
June 29   Clay county citizens formally request the Mormons to leave the area.   Origins, 90.
July 1   Clay county citizens meet with Mormon representatives    
July 19   A warrant for the arrest David W. Patten (h), Warren Parrish, and Wilford Woodruff is issued in Tennessee on the grounds that they have been "prophesying falsely, by saying that four persons who were baptized should receive the Holy Ghost in twenty-four hours, and that Christ should come the second time before this generation passed away." Charges dropped against Wilford since he wasn't present at the time. The other two are acquitted the next day.   WWJ 1:83; ¶ Wilford Woodruff (h1)
July 25   General assembly in Zion discusses work and emergency aid for 200 destitute families entering the state.   Minutes of July 25, 1836
    Joseph, Hyrum, Sidney, and Oliver leave Kirtland and the next evening arrive at Buffalo on their way east.   HC 2:463.
Early August   Joseph, Hyrum, Sidney, and Oliver arrive in Salem, Massachusetts in search of treasure.   HC 2:464; No man knows, 192.
August 6   D&C 111 (Salem, Massachusetts): Notwithstanding his "follies," the Lord is "not displeased" with Joseph's journey, for there are many people in the city they can reach whom the Lord will "gather out in due time for the benefit of Zion." In time, Joseph will have their wealth. The Lord will give Joseph power to pay his debts.    
August 8   John Whitmer and W. W. Phelps purchase land that will become Far West.   FWR, 105–106; CHC, 1:423.
August 11   Date "appointed" in 1834 "for the redemption of Zion."   Joseph to Lyman Wight and others, Aug. 16, 1834 in JS personal, 2nd ed., 347–350; HC 2:144–146.
October 21   Heber C. Kimball arrives in Kirtland after 5-month mission to New York, Vermont, and Maine, having baptized 30.   ¶ Heber C. Kimball (h3)
November 2   Constitution of the Kirtland Safety Society bank is adopted with Sidney as president and Joseph as cashier.   Kirtland economy, 42.
November 7   Petition signed by seventy Mormons, including the First Presidency and 9 other general authorities, warn the non-Mormon justice of the peace out of Kirtland.   Origins, 91, 331n43, 625.
November 15   Presidents John Whitmer and W. W. Phelps appoint a construction committee for the house of the Lord in Far West, later contested by the high council.   Minutes of Nov.r 15, 1836
November 16   Fanny Alger (Smith) marries Solomon Custer in Wayne county, Indiana.   Mormon polygamy, 10; Sacred loneliness, 25.
December   Ebenezer Robonsin sets type for 1837 edition of the Book of Mormon
